Summer, 2008

Dear Second Grade Parents:

Enclosed you will find a list of recommended reading for the summer months. Please use the Reading Journal pages to keep track of the books that you have read.

We hope that your child can read at least 20 books during the summer vacation. Encourage your child to read on his/her own as well as reading aloud to your child. Children of all ages enjoy being read to, and reading to children at an early age encourages them to want to read on their own.

In addition to keeping the Reading Journal, students will do projects such as Fan-Fold Display, My Book Box, Story Ball, and Story Map, on at least three of the books which they have read from the Second Grade Summer Reading List. They will bring their summer reading journals and projects to Second Grade when they return to school in the fall. Children will also asked to share their summer reading with their classmates.

It is also important to keep practicing math skills over the summer. Knowing basic addition and subtraction facts is an important part of second grade curriculum as we begin to build upon that foundation. You can help prepare your child for second grade math by practicing with addition and subtraction flash cards.

Working together we can help each one of our children become good readers!

Sincerely,

Ms. Julie Worley
Second Grade Teacher
