Summer, 2008

Dear New Fifth Graders:

Have a refreshing, fun-filled summer that includes a time for reading and writing, too.

During your ten weeks of summer vacation, you are required to read a minimum of three books from the following list, one book from each category. Books are available at the public library or at a bookstore. You should read daily for at least 20 minutes. Every day after reading, you should fill out the Summer Reading Journal. Please include the date, total minutes read, which pages you read (example: pp. 33 - 72), a short summary and a brief comment.

After completing the book, design a cover that illustrates a favorite scene. Include the title and author of the book and your name. Staple the journal entries together inside the cover.

Bring the three completed journals to school on the first day of school. You will receive a Reading grade for completing these three journals. Extra credit will be given for additional books read with completed reading journals.

See you in August. Have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Joan Raab
Fifth Grade Teacher
