Summer, 2008

Dear 8th Grade Parents:

Enclosed you will find a list of recommended reading for the summer months. Students will need to read at least three books this summer from the enclosed reading list as well as the book Night by Eli Wiesel.

In the fall students will need to bring a reading journal and cover illustration for each of the four books as well as a copy of Night (on loan from the library is fine). Below you will find a format for the reading journal that your student should follow. The response journal should be written on binder paper

Journals will contain the following:

Cover:
x
Student illustration of favorite scene in the story
title, author, student name
Journal Entries: Date,
Brief summary
Number of pages read (For example, pages 20 - 47)
Personal comments on the pages read

Your child will need to complete at least three journal assignments (see attached list). Students will bring their summer reading projects to Grade Eight when they return to school in the fall. Students will be asked to present at least one selection from their summer reading journals to the class. This will be the first assignment for Grade Eight! Encourage your child to read during the summer and help them get off to a good start in Eighth Grade.

Strong reading skills are essential to academic success!

Sincerely,

Ms. Erin Simmeth
Eighth Grade Teacher
