Summer, 2008
Dear Parents:
Studies show
that there is a direct connection between the amount of reading children
do and the success they experience in school and beyond. During the
school year we have stressed the importance of independent reading
at all grade levels by either reading to the students or providing
quiet time for Silent Sustained Reading. You have supported this by
insuring that your child reads each day as part of their homework
assignments. It is essential to encourage our students to maintain
a regular reading routine throughout the summer months. Therefore,
we are continuing our summer reading program.
The teachers
at each grade level have agreed upon books which they are requiring
students to read. Each child is also asked to complete a summer reading
log or journal which they will be asked to submit the first week of
school. Students will also asked to make an oral presentation on one
of their summer reading selections. The assigned reading will be the
springboard for discussions and assignments during the first week
of school. It is essential that your child completes this reading
in order to be prepared for the new school year. I hope that your
child enjoys the selections and looks forward to the follow-up in
the fall.
The books
are available at the public library as well as major booksellers.
The teachers
and I appreciate your support of this assignment and hope that it
is only part of your child's summer reading experience. Reading is
a skill that requires practice like anything else. Summer reading
can help students of all abilities keep their skills sharp in order
to be ready for the start of school. You can help by showing your
child that reading is a year-round activity which you, too, enjoy.
Encourage your child and give praise for his/her reading achievements.
Included in this envelope you will find the summer reading list for
your child's grade level as well as log or journal pages for him/her
to complete.
Working together
we can help each of our children become successful readers and learners!
Sincerely,
Andreina Gualco
